2011 Sparkle and Shine 5K

It was very cold in the morning! The registration table volunteers.
The Sparkle and Shine 5K is a part of the Girls on the Run organization. The Girls on the Run organization helps girls from elementary school to the end of middle school train for a 5K that they have at the end of the session. This 5K is called the Girls on the Run Sparkle and Shine 5K and as the girls begin and finish the race, the organization puts a highlight on the girls' amazing accomplishment of training for the 5K. Its not about the fastest time, or who wins, it is about the girls' accomplishments and that everyone is a winner. That is one for the main reasons why I decided to volunteer with the Girls on the Run San Diego because I love the idea of boosting girls self confidence in themselves, I think that having self confidence is a wonderful thing and I think that every girl needs the self confidence boost that comes with doing something great, like running a 5K. This is my first time volunteering with Girls on the Run San Diego and it is for their winter Sparkle and Shine 5K. I volunteered for a total of four hours today. I got to Embarcadero Park at 6 am sharp and I began to help set up for the race. I helped the vendors set up their tables, and then I returned to the registration table. I worked the registration table, welcoming the runners and getting them registered for their race. While the race was going on, I was at the finishing line cheering on the girls as the crossed the finish line. It was great seeing their smiling faces and I felt as if i was really helping them boost their confidence. I then returned to the registration table to hand out the race bags which included a shirt for the girls as well as stickers and coupons. I had a wonderful time congratulating the girls about their accomplishment in finishing the race. I left the race at 10 am and I felt as if volunteering early in the morning was a great start to my day. :)
